Redskins Saturday Spotlight: Top ten prospect big board in Round 1
By Ian Cummings
I’ve written about Jerry Jeudy numerous times this season; he naturally forces his way into the conversation for the Redskins, who still need dynamic talent at wide receiver. Terry McLaurin needs a wingman, and Jeudy would certainly fill that role. But at what cost?
Jeudy is probably everything you’ve heard about him. He’s fast, he’s instinctive, and he’s one of the best route runners to hit the draft circuit, maybe ever. Jeudy’s elite route running feel and nuance makes him a high-floor prospect who, in the right offense, could be a nightmare for opposing defenses.
That said, Jeudy falls in at No. 9 for two specific reasons. This draft class is deep at wide receiver, so it’s possible that the Redskins wouldn’t be best served using their top five pick on that position, when they have other pressing needs. Additionally, Jeudy may be great, but there are two receivers who have arguably more upside than him.
Granted, upside isn’t always a reason to pass up a near-perfect 10 for an eight with 10 potential. But Jeudy’s strengths, as well as his limitations, are fairly set in stone. He’s an incredible route runner, with the explosive cuts, balance, and footwork to be an offense’s X-factor. But he’s also undersized, and he offers few dominant physical traits. Jeudy should be considered by the Redskins, but there are other options who might deserve more attention.
