Redskins Reality Checks: Greg Manusky throws defense under the bus
By Tim Payne
3. The Reality Is, Dwayne Haskins showed progress against the Jets.
The consensus opinion was that Dwayne Haskins took a step back against the Jets last Sunday.
I beg to differ.
The offense digressed. Haskins showed progress, both on and off the field. Sure, he made some bad decisions and took some bad sacks. But he also showed resilience and growth to move the offense late in the game. His interception was not his fault, though he should have looked elsewhere, pre-snap. He got happy feet at points. He rushed a couple of throws.
But Haskins is a rookie. And his pocket presence was improved. He showed some real leadership and fire on the sidelines. No conclusions can be reached yet, but I was encouraged by his progress.
4. The Reality Is, the offensive line has been really bad this year.
There were plenty of different takes on the video that emerged of Haskins’ impassioned conversation with his offensive line on Sunday. In case you somehow haven’t seen it…take a look:
My take is that it revealed just how checked-out this offensive line is. They looked disinterested in winning, resigned to failure, and mad about having to talk about it. And their play on the field has largely backed up that perspective all season.
This might be the single largest indicator of how badly the Redskins botched the Trent Williams situation. This offensive line went from solid and mentally tough to shaky and disinterested without him. It’s been a stark and abrupt tumble.
