The Washington Redskins made a necessary move ahead of Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions. They placed tight end Vernon Davis on IR and promoted defensive lineman Ryan Bee from the practice squad.

It looks like Vernon Davis’ final game as a member of the Washington Redskins may have come in Week 4 against the New York Giants.

Davis, 35, suffered a concussion in that Week 4 contest and wasn’t able to return to the field for the next two months. Ahead of Week 12, the Redskins decided to end his season by placing him on IR.

All told, Davis finished the season with 10 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown in four games. With him now out for the season, Jeremy Sprinkle and Hale Hentges will get an extended look as the Nos. 1 and 2 tight ends as they have been getting in recent weeks.

At this point, it seems unlikely that Davis will return to the team in 2019. He is going to be a 36-year-old free agent in March and if he elects to stay in the league, he will probably want to move on to a contender to serve as a backup as opposed to staying on as a backup/spot starter for the Redskins.

Besides, the Redskins may not want to keep Davis around anyway. The team needs to overhaul their roster and move on from veterans that don’t fit the timeline of their rebuild. Davis would certainly qualify as one, so the team probably won’t have much interest in bringing him back, unless he signs for the minimum.

Still, Davis deserves a little bit of appreciation for the effort he put forth during his four years with the Redskins. He had a couple of good seasons in which he revitalized his career and was the team’s top producer at tight end. In 2017, he caught 43 passes for 648 yards and three touchdowns and did well to replace the production the team was hoping to get from Jordan Reed.

Moving Davis to IR was a necessary move at this point, as it was clear that he wasn’t going to be healthy for the rest of this season. Plus, the team needed to add some depth on their defensive line with Darorn Payne being doubtful for the game. That’s why the team added Ryan Bee from the practice squad.

Bee is a 6-foot-7 defensive lineman who signed with the ‘Skins as an undrafted free agent from Marshall. He impressed with his well-rounded play in the preseason and offers great length and solid pass rushing skills. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, he can do on Sunday as the team’s fifth active defensive lineman.

This move had to be made, but it will be interesting to see if the team elects to add a third tight end to the roster in the near future. As it stands, the ‘Skins are thin at the position and perhaps when the defensive line is healthier, Bee will go back to the practice squad with another TE joining the fray.
