3. Redskins must get more from their return game

For all the struggles the Redskins’ offense has had so far this season, the special teams unit hasn’t done them any favors with field position. After a few nice returns early in the season, Steven Sims Jr. hasn’t offered much in the kickoff return game lately. Against Buffalo, he was unable to take anything out past the 30-yard line, routinely leaving Haskins and company with a lot of field ahead of them.

The same thing goes with the punt returns. Trey Quinn hasn’t been good enough returning punts this season. On ten returns, Quinn is averaging just 6.4 yards per return with a long of 15 yards. One play, in particular, stood out against Buffalo. Instead of fielding a punt in the fourth quarter, Quinn decided to let it roll instead and gave up close to 15 yards of field position. The Redskins aren’t good enough to overcome plays like that.

The Redskins must get better play from their returners this week. Make the smart play on a punt. Take a kickoff back 60 yards (or to the house) and give Haskins a short field. Provide a spark for a struggling offense. If they can have a productive day from their special teams unit, there’s a good chance their offense will be able to finish a few drives.
