Redskins full NFL first-round mock: Is Chase Young the one?
By Ian Cummings
While the Baltimore Ravens offense has been exceptional this season, their defense has underperformed, and a big reason why is the team’s lack of a consistent pass rushing output.
As of now, the Ravens are tied with the Lions for No. 27 in the NFL in sacks, with just 14.0 through eight regular season contests. Matthew Judon leads the team with 4.0 sacks, and while Judon has openly expressed his hunger on live television, the Ravens defense as a whole has been starved of success.
Curtis Weaver is a player who can help the Ravens with their protein problem in the short-term, and potentially become a defensive star over the course of the team’s Super Bowl window. It’s a status he’s already taken hold of in the Mountain West, where he’s logged 31.0 sacks and 41.5 tackles for loss over the past two and a half years. So far in 2019, Weaver is challenging his career-high marks in both categories, with 10.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss in eight games.
Weaver has good size at 6-foot-3, 255, and he has the length to establish an anchor and expedite pass rush plans at the line of scrimmage. As evidenced by his production, he’s a workmanlike player with a quick twitch and a relentless motor. He’d bring a high floor to the Ravens’ pass rush department as a speed rusher, and he still has plenty of room to grow in terms of technique. The Ravens need to apply pressure to assist their expensive secondary, and Weaver might just be the one to get it done.
