Los Angeles Chargers. Justin Herbert. 14. player. 13. . Quarterback

It’s almost painful to accept that the Philip Rivers era might soon be over. The 37-year old has seen his play slightly decline over the years, and his 4-6 Los Angeles Chargers might need a fresh start at the game’s most important position. And even if they don’t choose 2020 as the transition point, change is coming, and fast.

The 2020 NFL Draft class, with its relatively high number of intriguing quarterback prospects, marks a valuable opportunity for the Chargers to place a signal caller in their pipeline early. At No. 14, they won’t get their pick of the litter, but there’s plenty left over in the leftovers for them to feel satisfied.

Justin Herbert is the fourth quarterback off the board in this mock, but he offers substantial upside for this juncture. Herbert has an excellent combination of size and athleticism at 6-foot-6, 235, and he offers impressive arm talent and accuracy in a closed system, as well as the traits to potentially develop his off-script game in the future.

Herbert need to refine his mental game in the NFL, and injury proneness is a modest concern, but Herbert offers franchise quarterback upside for a team that’ll soon lose its own. Whether he starts right away, or sits behind Rivers for a season, Herbert can make the transition the Chargers have been dreading for years, a smooth one.
