The Washington Redskins are on bye this week and they made a big roster move. They cut Craig Reynolds to make room on the 53-man roster for Derrius Guice.

The Washington Redskins made a critical roster decision on Tuesday afternoon. They parted ways with Craig Reynolds, releasing the undrafted rookie from their 53-man roster.

On the surface, cutting Reynolds made not seem like a big move for the Redskins. After all, why is parting ways with a running back who has played a grand total of 28 special teams snaps and none on defense a big deal?

Well, the real reason it’s a big deal is that it signifies the return of running back Derrius Guice.

More from Riggo's Rag

Guice, the team’s second-round pick in 2018, hasn’t played since the first week of the season. In that game, he managed only 18 yards on 10 carries and then went on IR after it was revealed that he had a meniscus injury. But now, it appears that he will be healthy enough to play down the stretch for the Redskins.

This is good news for the squad. They were getting a bit thin at running back with Chris Thompson banged-up and Adrian Peterson handling a majority of the workload at the position. But now, Guice will be able to come in and split carries with Peterson to ensure that they can both stay fresh. And in Bill Callahan‘s ground-heavy offense, that will be crucial.

Additionally, it means that the ‘Skins will get a chance to evaluate Guice’s performance. He didn’t play as a rookie after suffering an ACL tear and has only logged the one game of NFL action against the Eagles in Week 1. They need more tape on him to fully understand what type of asset he can be for the team moving forward.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on Guice moving forward, and his integration into the offense will be a big storyline moving forward.

As for Reynolds, he could rejoin the practice squad if he clears waivers, which is likely. We’ll see if the ‘Skins want to keep the undrafted rookie who worked hard during training camp.
