Redskins vs. Bills: Keys to victory in Week 9 of the 2019 season
By Kyle Hundley
2. Redskins get Dwayne Haskins into his comfort zone
It’s official. Dwayne Haskins is going to make his first NFL start this weekend. In his two relief appearances this season, Haskins has not looked good, though the coaching staff didn’t do him any favors up to this point. He got to play the entire second half against Minnesota after Case Keenum left with a concussion and finished 3 of 5 for 33 yards with one critical interception and a QBR of 0.0.
Haskins can only go up from here. With Keenum in concussion protocol, Haskins finally got a week of first-team reps, which will undoubtedly help. Kevin O’Connell and Bill Callahan must put Haskins in a position to succeed. This includes calling plays he’s comfortable with as well as simplifying the playbook and verbiage. Get Haskins some quick easy completions and get his confidence up. Look for him to get the ball to former OSU teammate Terry McLaurin frequently.
Haskins is now the present and the future of the Redskins franchise. If he can have a productive first start and show the two relief appearances were an aberration of the future he’s going to have, the Redskins offense will be in for a good day.
