Redskins offensive tackle Trent Williams reported to the Washington Redskins facilities yesterday, after the passing of the trade deadline. And now, he’s one step closer to potentially playing.

There will be much discourse surrounding the Washington Redskins and the Trent Williams saga. The team had a chance to trade him before the deadline, but due to motivations unclear without inference, they failed to do so, and now, Williams has reported to Redskins Park, allegedly to accrue his full season, maintain his contract guarantees, and spite Bruce Allen just a bit more.

Whether Williams actually intends to play now that he has returned to Redskins Park is unclear. He could opt to sit, but that could lead to protest and potential legal action from the Redskins organization, as one could allege that the holdout would only then continue.

The situation is still very much mired in murky waters, but we were provided with a material update today. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Williams took his mandatory physical today, and he passed that physical, confirming that he has remained in football shape over the course of his extended holdout.

Rapoport, after reporting that Williams had passed his physical, expressed uncertainty as to what would happen next. The assumption is that Williams will join the team at practice today at 1:00 P.M., but until that happens, “no one is 100 percent sure”.

Contractually, Williams simply had to report before Week 10 to join the team for a full accrued season. No one can make him play past this point. There’s still a chance that Williams continues to sit out, in hopes that he’ll be released or traded in the offseason. If his relationship with Washington is truly as fractured as early reports suggested, then this conclusion would not be particularly surprising.

That said, Williams is known to be loyal to his team mates, who have been supportive of him throughout this process. He could also suit up for the final part of the season, give potential suitors a look at his most recent body of work, and restart the holdout next offseason. All possibilities are on the table right now. For now, all we know is that Williams is back, he’s healthy, and he has all the leverage.
