The Washington Redskins are playing hard-ball in trade negotiations surrounding Trent Williams.

The NFL’s trade deadline is today at 4:00 PM eastern standard time, and recent developments have revealed that the Washington Redskins are, in fact, at least somewhat interested in selling ahead of the deadline.

For the entire first half of the 2019 season, it was reported that the Redskins and Bruce Allen, despite receiving interest in Trent Williams from other teams, were not willing to listen to offers. The holdout between Williams and Allen became personal to Allen, by some reports, and no agreement was reached.

Now, however, with the pressure of time working against them, the Redskins have woken up. Or at least, they’re half-awake. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Redskins are now open to dealing Williams, but because they were so stubborn in their idleness early on, they aren’t quite tuned in to the market.

Per Rapoport, the Redskins are “big-game hunting”, and asking for more than what their leverage can get them. Had Washington acted quickly, they could have been able to strike a deal with a needy team before teams figured out who they were this season, and they would have been able to, if not strike a deal, get a better sense of what Williams demands on the market.

Now, with two hours left before the deadline, the Redskins are still far apart with any potential suitors. The Cleveland Browns, most notably, have had discussions with Washington about Williams, but the Browns are more interested in sending a package of mid-round picks for the 31-year old tackle. Washington, meanwhile, is demanding a Pro Bowl cornerback on a rookie deal in Denzel Ward. For two sides at the negotiating table, it doesn’t get more polarized than that.

There’s still time for the burgundy and gold to make a deal, but they have to realize they aren’t in the African safari. They’ll need to make a compromise if they want to get some sort of value for Williams. Otherwise, they’ll only be making a bad situation worse.
