The Washington Redskins could be getting a reinforcement at running back in a few weeks. Derrius Guice started practicing and could return from IR before Week 11 against the New York Jets.

So far this season, the Washington Redskins have been utilizing Adrian Peterson as their lead back. The 34-year-old has done a good job of holding the fort and after a slow start to the season, he has played much better in recent weeks.

That said, aside from Peterson, the team doesn’t have much at running back. Chris Thompson is currently injured and there isn’t a timetable for his return. And since Week 1, Derrius Guice hasn’t been on the active roster either.

But that seems likely to change in the near future.

Redskins interim head coach Bill Callahan said that he is expecting Guice to be ready to play in Week 11 against the Jets. That is the first date that Guice will be eligible to return to action, as he must spend at least eight games on the IR before returning. But since he returned to practice on Monday afternoon, it seems that he will, in fact, be returning.

Getting Guice back should spark the run game. More importantly though, it will give the team a chance to evaluate Guice. He has barely been on the field since being a second-round pick by the team in the 2018 NFL Draft as an ACL tear robbed him of his rookie season while a meniscus tear sidelined him this season. He had a lot of potential coming out of LSU, but the team will need more than 10 carries to evaluate him at this level.

The final seven games of the season will be a good chance for Guice to prove himself if he does, in fact, return for Week 11. And if he showcases the nice balance and burst that got him noticed in college, he could be an asset to the Washington offense. And at the very least, having him healthy could help out Dwayne Haskins if he makes any starts down the stretch.

Moving forward, it will be interesting to see what Guice can do. But at this point in time, it does seem that he will play again this season.
