Stud No. 1 – DL Matt Ioannidis

A few people said Matt Ioannidis was a snub in my studs and duds piece last week, and they may have been right. So to make up for it, I’m making Ioannidis my top stud of Week 8. It’s not by default, however. Ioannidis carried his strong play from FedEx Field to Minneapolis.

Ioannidis notched a sack this time around, putting together a stat line that consisted of six total tackles, three solo tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, and one quarterback hit. Ioannidis is now up to 3.5 sacks through eight games, and he’s on pace to nearly match his stellar totals from last season.

Ioannidis was better against the run in Week 7, but he was just as disruptive as a pass rushing presence in Week 8, and his impact was noticeable. Kirk Cousins wasn’t comfortable stepping up into the pocket because of the Redskins interior defensive line. Luckily for Cousins, the game didn’t demand him to pass down the stretch, but if had been forced to, Ioannidis would have been there.

Ioannidis wasn’t the only Redskins interior lineman to shine under the lights. Jonathan Allen also had a sack, and Daron Payne made a crucial play early on, running down the field in pursuit of Stefon Diggs, to eventually catch him and help Cole Holcomb force a fumble. These three players are all playing at a high level, and Ioannidis needs to be mentioned in the same breath as the starters.
