The Kansas City Chiefs now have a big hole at quarterback with Patrick Mahomes set to miss time. Could the Washington Redskins help give them a filler option while the reigning MVP is out?

The Chiefs may have won over the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football, but it was a pyrrhic victory. Kansas City lost Patrick Mahomes to a dislocated kneecap in the first half and he was immediately ruled out of the game. Early reports indicate that Mahomes should miss at least three weeks and maybe more depending on the surrounding ligament damage.

With Mahomes out at least short-term, the Chiefs are in a bit of a bind at quarterback. They have veteran Matt Moore as their lone backup option. Undrafted rookie Kyle Shurmur is on the practice squad, but neither inspires much hope. After all, Moore had been retired for a year and a half before the Chiefs called on him in late August to take over the backup role from the injured Chad Henne.

Because of the injuries the team has sustained at quarterback, they could be in a spot of trouble. And at the very least, they don’t have a viable alternative to Moore should he struggle or get hurt. For that reason, the team could explore adding another veteran quarterback on the cheap. And the Redskins may be able to help in this circumstance.

Sitting at 1-5 as of this writing, the Redskins aren’t going anywhere. They have three quarterbacks on their active roster, and only one is likely to be with the team next year. That’s first-round rookie Dwayne Haskins, who is the heir apparent at quarterback. Case Keenum and Colt McCoy have been the starters at QB this year, but both are free agents after the season. And given the presence of Haskins and the fact that Alex Smith is still on the roster, either staying beyond this season is unlikely.

With that said, the Redskins should look to offload one f their veterans onto the Chiefs if Andy Reid‘s team does seek outside help at the quarterback position. The quarterback market is razor-thin right now due to all of the injuries to starters across the league. So, if the Chiefs want to find a veteran that can help hold the fort or at least backup Moore, the Redskins could be one of their only logical trade targets.

It’s important to note that Keenum and McCoy wouldn’t likely fetch much on the trade market. Both are expiring contracts and mostly serve the purpose of adding veteran depth for a team like the Chiefs. Keenum can be a solid starter when all goes well, but the Chiefs only need a short-term starter unless the Mahomes injury is worse than anticipated. So, they wouldn’t likely give up anything more than a conditional sixth-round pick for his services.

Keenum and McCoy may not ultimately interest the Chiefs. But the Redskins should at least check. The trade deadline is in 11 days and the team could stand to offload at least one of their veteran quarterbacks to open the door for Haskins to get some late-season reps in what looks like a lost season.

Even if they can nab a late-round draft pick for one of their passers, it would be worth it. Otherwise, they will likely be gone for nothing at the end of this season.
