Redskins: Three potential Trent Williams trade package ideas as deadline approach
New England Patriots trade first-round, fifth-round pick for Trent Williams, Vernon Davis
The Patriots need some help on the offensive line. With Isaiah Wynn out, the team has had no choice but to turn to veteran journeyman Marshall Newhouse to man the left tackle position. The results have been mixed, and Tom Brady has been under pressure as a result of this.
While Wynn could return from IR, it still would be ideal for the Patriots to get some insurance. Williams would be just that. The veteran would immediately start at left tackle for the Patriots and Wynn would move to the swing tackle role. Wynn would be a great backup for Williams, who has missed time with a balky knee in recent seasons, so the duo there would be able to get the job done.
Beyond that, Williams could help to mentor Wynn and with Williams under contract through 2020, it would buy Bill Belichick and Dante Scarnecchia time to develop Wynn more. And that could pay massive dividends given how good Wynn has looked in minimal action at the NFL level.

In addition to this upgrade, the Patriots could use some help at tight end. If they go for a low-cost option on the market, Vernon Davis would be intriguing. Matt LaCosse has battled injuries while Ryan Izzo has been inconsistent in New England. Ben Watson is back after being suspended and released, but he’s no sure thing either.
Vernon Davis may be on the older side at 35, but the Patriots like veterans and could find a way to use him to the best of his abilities. He could work well in tandem with fellow veteran and 37-year-old Watson and the duo could give Brady some extra targets in his depleted receiving corps. Davis is no Rob Gronkowski, but he’s better than what the Patriots currently have.
If the Pats give up first and fifth-round picks to Washington, perhaps this deal could work. The Redskins aren’t going anywhere this year, so maybe they’d be willing to offload Davis to a contender. That would sweeten the pot for New England and could convince them to give up a Day 3 pick.
Given what players are going for on the market right now, this seems like a reasonable deal, especially considering that Williams isn’t just a rental. The Redskins may be able to get more elsewhere, but trading with New England could be a possibility. The only complication would be New England’s cap space, but they could easily generate some by extending Kyle Van Noy, Devin McCourty, and some other key members of their team.
That said, it’s also possible that the pick-loving Belichick won’t be willing to give up this much, even for a couple of players that could help him now. So, we’ll check out another package that has the ‘Skins grabbing a new tight end as part of it.
