Things have been quiet on the Trent Williams front, but a rumor has surfaced which alleges the Redskins might be moving the veteran tackle soon.

The Washington Redskins have maintained a firm stance of idleness since it was first revealed that veteran offensive tackle Trent Williams was holding out for the 2019 regular season. Despite no appearances from Williams, and despite the team’s current lack of future assets, Bruce Allen and company showed no movement as time went on. In his press conference just last week, Allen declared that the Redskins were still not interested in entertaining offers for Williams.

While there have been no concrete reports of discussions, however, a new rumor has surfaced which gives credence to the notion that the Redskins might be starting to budge from their original position. Per Browns reporter Steve Doerschuk, Trent Williams could find himself heading to Cleveland “quite soon”.

A deal with the Browns would make sense; the Browns were often referenced as one of the few logical destinations in the NFL for Trent Williams to go via trade. Sitting at 2-4 in what was supposed to be a groundbreaking year, the Browns need immediate offensive line help, especially at offensive tackle. Now two games back in the AFC South, the Browns need to be aggressive to reclaim their season. Such a desire bodes well for the returns the Redskins might get.

The Redskins are in dire need of assets, and a deal involving Williams is just what they need to restock their ammunition for the 2020 NFL Draft. The Cleveland Browns have a first-round pick and a second-round pick, so the items are there for a deal to be made.

At this point, it’s hard to tell who has more leverage. With Williams continuing to be a no-show, Washington might be more pressured to simply take what they can get for him. The Browns, meanwhile, have a pressing need and games slipping away. Netting a second-round pick seems to be a likely best-case scenario for Washington. Had they acted quicker, they could have gotten a first-rounder.

All that said, these are just rumors for now. It is, however, notable that Doerschuk correctly reported the Browns trade for Odell Beckham Jr. in the offseason of 2019. He is a credible source, and this situation deserves further monitoring. Stick with us, as we’ll keep you in the loop with any updates.
