The Washington Redskins are reportedly working out another running back, Josh Ferguson, with Chris Thompson‘s availability in doubt.

Against the Miami Dolphins, the Redskins were shorthanded at the running back position. Third-down back Chris Thompson went down with a toe injury during the game and didn’t return. Adrian Peterson carried most of the load for the team with Wendell Smallwood playing a minor role as well.

Thompson has been banged up in the past and he got an MRI on the injury. Evidently, he may need to miss some time as a result of it.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Thompson is dealing with turf toe. And with Thompson’s availability “in some doubt”, the team is working out Josh Ferguson at running back.

This is obviously bad news for Thompson, as he was serving as a solid receiving weapon out of the backfield. Given that he’s been banged up in the past, the team likely wants to give themselves options just in case he needs time to recover.

Ferguson was signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2016. He spent two seasons with the team and saw most of his action in ’16. He has caught 23 passes for 152 yards during his career while generating just 25 yards on 16 carries.

Ferguson has bounced between the New England Patriots and Houston Texans practice squads since 2018, and he was among the Texans final cuts this year. Just 26, Ferguson does still have some upside, so the Redskins are probably just seeing what he has in the tank and will consider adding him if Thompson can’t go moving forward.

It will be interesting to see what the team does at running back if Thompson is hurt. Derrius Guice is already on IR and he soon will have a chance to practice and be designated for return. However, it’s not a guarantee that he will come back. So, if Thompson is out even just for a week or two, the team will need to add a third running back to the roster temporarily. Whether that’s Ferguson, a practice squad player like Craig Reynolds, or another free agent on the market would be the only question left to answer.
