Dud: The usage of WR Steven Sims Jr.

Coming into the game against the Dolphins, it sure seemed like Kevin O’Connell was ready to unleash undrafted receiver Steven Sims. O’Connell talked him up after the team’s coaching change, and it seemed like the team was going to try to get him involved more on offense.

Instead, Sims got just one touch on offense. He turned the one touch into one yard.

Big whoop.

Of course, this isn’t an indictment of Sims and his skill set. It’s clear that the Kansas product has the speed needed to be a weapon on offense. O’Connell and Bill Callahan just didn’t seem to be willing to use him as much as they had implied. But for a team that needs some explosive players to complement McLaurin, it seemed like a big missed opportunity not to get Sims involved a bit more.

This is especially true given the fact that Chris Thompson exited this game with a foot injury. Thompson is one of the few explosive players on the team’s offense.

Instead of mixing in Sims a bit more once Thompson came up lame, the team just decided to roll with Adrian Peterson. That worked to an extent, but they could’ve at least had Sims in for some packages to get him more plays. After all, Sims had a 65-yard touchdown run last week and was one of the team’s big bright spots in the team’s loss to the Patriots. So, why not get him involved more?

Perhaps Sims will have more of a role going forward. But for the time being, the way that the team utilized him — or rather, didn’t utilize him — was one of the most disappointing parts of the team’s win.
