Redskins make minor changes to coaching staff after Bill Callahan hire
The Washington Redskins made some minor changes to their coaching staff after Bill Callahan’s hiring, promoting Phil Rauscher to offensive line coach and adding Aaron Stamn as an offensive assistant.
The Redskins firing Jay Gruden was obviously the biggest coaching shakeup for the team this season and league-wide as well. But ahead of Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins, the Redskins have made a couple of other minor changes to Bill Callahan’s staff.
According to the team’s official Twitter account, the ‘Skins have promoted Phil Rauscher to the offensive line coach position while they also brought on Aaron Stamn as an offensive assistant. Both moves are sensible ones.
Before being tapped as the Redskins interim head coach, Callahan had been serving as their offensive line coach. With more responsibility on his plate, it makes sense that he would want to relinquish his duties as offensive line coach and take more of a macro view of the team.

Promoting Rauscher definitely was the right move here. Rauscher has been in the league for five years and was in his second year with the Redskins serving as the assistant offensive line coach. Giving him a shot in a bigger role will afford the team an opportunity to evaluate his performance and see if he would be a worthy candidate to coach the unit moving forward.
Rauscher’s familiarity should help the cause as well. Continuity is important on the offensive line, and that includes coaching. So, we’ll see what he can do moving forward.
As for the addition of Stamn, that is an interesting one. He had been coaching at Liberty University as recently as 2018 and previously coached with Callahan at Nebraska earlier in the millennium. Stamn has served as an offensive coordinator with Liberty at the college level, but he figures to assistant the offense in a number of roles.
Overall, these two hires are solid ones for Callahan, and they’ll ensure that he can run the show as the head coach over the course of the next 11 weeks. This will be an audition for all on the Redskins coaching staff, and it will be interesting to see how different things are under Callahan.
