According to a report, the Redskins are planning on starting Case Keenum at the quarterback position this week.

The Redskins quarterback carousel will continue on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

After the firing of Jay Gruden, it was widely expected that Colt McCoy would no longer be starting at quarterback. He had been mediocre at best against the New England Patriots, and the veteran signal-caller was a favorite of Gruden. With his biggest in-house supporter gone, interim head coach Bill Callahan was likely to make a move at quarterback.

And according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Callahan will do just that. Rapoport is reporting that Case Keenum is expected to be the starter in Miami provided that he is healthy after dealing with a foot injury the past couple of weeks.

It makes sense for Callahan to turn to Keenum, the veteran option, in an effort to get the team’s first win. Keenum played well in the first two games of the season before struggling against the Bears and being benched against the Giants. But in the latter game, his foot injury was an issue. So long as they’re not rushing him back from that malady again, he should play well against a very bad defense.

One could easily have made a case that Dwayne Haskins should have started this game as well, as this would have been the easiest matchup possible for him during his first NFL start. But if the Redskins are truly committed to giving him time to develop and believe he’s best served sitting until he’s ready, this move makes sense.

That said, it still remains probable that Haskins will emerge as the starter at some point this season as the Redskins look to evaluate their future at the quarterback position. It just won’t be this week.

We’ll see how Keenum does on Sunday and we’ll keep an eye on how healthy he looks in the practice leading up to the game as well. It will be interesting to see if the team rolls with McCoy or Haskins as his backup, though it seems like the veteran will hold the edge at the moment as they continue to develop Haskins behind the scenes.
