Tristan Wirfs overview

Tristan Wirfs had an incredible athletic high school career at Mount Vernon High School. Mount Vernon is about 10 miles from Waterloo (the same area current Redskin center Ross Pierschbacher is also from), which is where I live in Iowa.

I can tell you firsthand there was a lot of chat locally about Wirfs when he was a prep. He was a state champion in track and field as a shotputter and discus thrower (where his incredible strength was evident), state champion in wrestling, and an All-American in football.

After being selected as an All-American, Wirfs committed to Iowa to play for coach Kirk Ferentz. Wirfs arrived at Iowa as part of a talented recruiting class that featured fellow potential top-10 pick, A.J. Epenesa.

Not long after arriving at Iowa, Wirfs made a little bit of Iowa history as he became the first true freshman to start at tackle for Ferentz. Since taking over, he has not looked back, starting every game except for the one in which he got suspended. A preseason all-American this season, Wirfs has a chance to be a top-10 pick in the coming draft should he decide to declare.

For a more detailed profile, check out the draft profile that FanSided’s Dan Schemzler did on Wirfs.

An incredible athlete, he was also named the No. 1 player on the Athletic’s Bruce Feldman’s 2019 Freak list. Though the athletic is a paid subscription, you can follow the link and view the top three players on his list (though it talks about why Colts fans should be excited for them). You can get an idea of how big of a freak Wirfs truly is with some of the names he beat out for the top spot).
