Report: Redskins coaching search likely to include these three coaches
The Washington Redskins are going to open up a head coaching search after firing Jay Gruden. These three coaches will reportedly be in the mix for a role with the team.
Jay Gruden is now gone and the Washington Redskins will be looking for a new head coach. They’ll be looking for one for the first time in six years. That’s the longest a single coach has lasted during the Dan Snyder era.
With Gruden gone and gone early, the Redskins are likely going to cast a net far and wide to find potential replacements. They are uniquely situated as the only team with a coaching vacancy at the moment, so that will afford them the opportunity to get a leg up and figure out exactly which coaches they want to target.
And it does appear that they have some early targets.
According to Ed Werder, the Redskins are likely to consider Mike Tomlin, Todd Bowles, and Eric Bieniemy as they search for a head coach.
All three of these candidates have their positives. Tomlin is the biggest name on this list and he has been able to win a couple of Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has had his share of struggles in recent seasons and sometimes his in-game play-calling and decision making can be lacking. But, he has long helped mold the Steelers into one of the best teams in the AFC. So, if the two sides part ways, Tomlin coming to Washington could make sense.
Bowles certainly would make sense for the team as well. He is one of the league’s best defensive minds and is an elite defensive coordinator. He has experience playing with the Redskins from 1992-93 and was the head coach of the New York Jets for four years. Bowles’ specialty was his ability to motivate his players and get them to play above expectations. That’s something that Washington has been lacking in recent seasons, so that’s a major reason that he could garner consideration for this job.
As for Bieniemy, he is the least proven option on this list, but he has a terrific offensive mind. He has found quite a lot of success as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator and could be the latest member of the Andy Reid coaching tree to land a quality coaching gig. Bieniemy’s play design is really solid and if given the opportunity to call plays and really unleash his potential, he could find a lot of success.
These three coaches are definitely solid candidates for the Redskins job and it will be interesting to see if Dan Snyder ultimately ends up pursuing them. At the very least, all three would make sense as candidates for the job.
