5. Redskins must get Colt McCoy acclimated quickly against a stout Pats’ defense

After Jay Gruden came into the week saying they “don’t have one right now” when it came to his plans for the quarterback position, he has since decided to start Colt McCoy against the Patriots. McCoy may have been the week one starter had he not been injured. McCoy has played under Gruden since they both arrived in 2014, so he knows Gruden’s offense as well as anyone, and Gruden believes in him.

McCoy has worked his way back just in time to face a very talented Patriots team. Being unable to practice for as long as he has, McCoy is undoubtedly going to have some rust on him, as is to be expected for anyone who has missed an extended period. The Redskins are battling injuries again as well, so McCoy is not going to have a full arsenal.

Washington must get that rust off McCoy quickly. Quick hitters and screen passes are the best way for a quarterback to shake off the rust while building confidence. Chris Thompson had his second explosive play off a screen pass in two weeks against the Giants. They should look for him again this game.
