At 0-4, will starting Dwayne Haskins at quarterback for the Washington Redskins be enough to save head coach Jay Gruden his job?

The Washington Redskins have been one of the worst teams in the NFL in the early part of the season. At 0-4, they are one of only two teams in the NFC without a victory this year, along with the 0-3-1 Arizona Cardinals. Washington is at a crossroad, but will starting Dwayne Haskins at quarterback be enough to save head coach Jay Gruden his job?

On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Josh Hill, along with former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, look at Redskins’ grim future and see what is in store for this struggling NFC East franchise the rest of the way in 2019 (43:15).

Schwartz got right to the point, “Jay Gruden is gone. Even if Haskins plays semi-well, they’re a dumpster fire right now. He’s not saving his job. He’s got to play like Pat Mahomes the next 13 weeks of the season for him to keep his job. No, he’s gone, way gone.”

Verderame wouldn’t try to argue against Schwartz’s take but added some context about why things are the way they are in the Redskins building. “As long as Bruce Allen is there, the Redskins are going to be a disaster because he’s always in Dan Snyder’s ear.”

Verderame would add that if things are going to get better with the Washington franchise, that means that Allen has to go. However, that doesn’t seem to be anywhere on the horizon, as his support from Snyder never seems to fade.

Sunday will presumably be Haskins’ first start for Washington. It will be against the 4-0 New England Patriots, so that’s not probably going to go over well. However, Haskins is an accurate passer and a tough kid, so he’ll have to make do with this baptism by fire in the nation’s capital.

Haskins may be the Redskins’ future, as well as their present, but he won’t be good enough during his rookie season to keep Gruden with the team heading into 2020. Look for Snyder and Allen to find the franchise’s next head coach at some point in this offseason.

Here are a few other topics that were discussed on this week’s episode of Stacking the Box:

  • Good Morning, Football‘s and The NFL Today‘s Nate Burleson says he hopes Jalen Ramsey “gets over it” and stays with the Jacksonville Jaguars (25:40).
  • The Detroit Lions are indeed a real playoff contender (44:50).
  • The Buffalo Bills earned respect in their loss to the Patriots (46:22).
  • Was Vontaze Burfict’s suspension overkill (50:35)?
