Report: Jay Gruden’s status doesn’t hinge on result vs. Giants
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jay Gruden’s status doesn’t hinge on the Redskins’ result vs. the Giants.
Jay Gruden’s seat is burning hot and over the course of the past week, the rumblings that he may not last much longer as the Redskins head coach have grown louder. Some have expected that a loss against the Giants could seal his fate and ensure that he won’t be coaching the Redskins beyond Week 4.
However, that may not actually be the case.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jay Gruden’s job isn’t actually hinging on the game. Here’s what Rapoport said on NFL Gameday Live ahead of Sunday’s game.
Of course, we won’t know if Jay Gruden is safe until we know. But on the surface, these rumors make sense.
The time for firing Gruden could soon be here, but does parting with him after Week 4 make sense? The Redskins have a tough game in Week 5 against the New England Patriots, and having an interim head coach’s first game be against one of the league’s best teams would be less-than-ideal. Perhaps waiting until after that matchup and making a move in Week 6 against the Miami Dolphins would make more sense.
That said, it’s still possible that the Redskins could move on from Gruden if they lose badly to the Giants. He simply is a lame duck at this point and it seems like the team needs to move on from him. If they part with him soon, the Redskins will be able to assess the rest of their coaching staff and see if any of their position coaches are worth keeping around or if they have any potential gems on their staff (like offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell).
Like I said, we won’t know about Gruden’s status until we know. But one thing is certain. His seat is burning hot and it’s highly unlikely that he will last the entire season as the head coach.
