Redskins vs. Giants: Keys to victory in Week 4 of the 2019 season
By Kyle Hundley
No. 3 – Redskins must shut down the running game and make the Giants one-dimensional
The Redskins caught a huge break when Saquon Barkley left the Buccaneers game with an ankle injury that will sideline him for the next four weeks. Barkley is an instrumental part of the Giants’ offense, so his loss is going to hurt. Behind Barkley on the depth chart are Wayne Gallman (who had just five carries for 13 yards against the Bucs) and Jonathan Hilliman.
The Redskins’ run defense did not have a great night against the Bears, as Chicago had 90 yards rushing on 24 carries. The inability to stop the run has been troubling, especially since they invested so much along the defensive line the last couple of years. Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen are two players to watch in the middle.
The Giants only had 72 yards rushing against a pretty good Buccaneers’ defense, 28 of them went to Daniel Jones, who had two touchdowns including the game-winner. The Redskins cannot let New York establish the run and help out a rookie quarterback making his second start, especially without Saquon Barkley. If that happens, the Washington defense is going to have a tough time getting off the field.
