Redskins quarterback Case Keenum is dealing with a foot injury and didn’t practice on Wednesday. Colt McCoy did return to action and was a full participant.

Well, the Redskins quarterback room is now looking as unsettled as ever. Even after Jay Gruden declared Case Keenum to be the starter moving forward following their loss to the Bears, his grasp of that role is tenuous, as rookie first-round quarterback Dwayne Haskins is waiting in the wings for his opportunity to start.

And now, Keenum is dealing with an injury that muddies the waters about his availability against the New York Giants.

According to multiple reports, Keenum missed Wednesday’s Redskins practice as he deals with a foot injury. He had X-rays on his foot after the loss the Bears, a game in which he was hit a number of times. Though Wednesday’s practice was just a walkthrough for Washington, Keenum’s absence is still important to note and the fact that he was in a boot for the session is certainly troublesome.

That said, Keenum is expected to be okay for Sunday’s game, according to Kareem Copeland of The Washington Post, even despite the boot. But as we’ve seen in the past, the Redskins tend to be optimistic about the injury timelines of their respective players. So, Keenum should be monitored. But if he gets back on the field Thursday, the team has indicated that he will still be the starter moving forward.

Another reason that Keenum needs to be watched is that Colt McCoy returned to practice as a full participant on Wednesday. McCoy has been out since suffering a fractured fibula last year, but he now appears healthy enough to play. Gruden loves McCoy’s skill set so if he feels that Keenum needs a week to rest due to injury but isn’t confident that Haskins is ready to start, McCoy could get the nod and make any injury decision surrounding Keenum a bit easier.

This early in the week, it’s impossible to know what Keenum’s status will be. And today’s absence may well have just been precautionary. At the end of the day, he should still be favored to start against the Giants provided that he’s healthy. Gruden said that he wasn’t considering a quarterback change after the game against the Bears, so unless Keenum’s foot injury is worse than anticipated, he will likely get another chance to start.

UPDATE (4:56 p.m.): Jay Gruden reiterated in a post-practice press conference that he expects Keenum will be able to push through the injury to play, so it looks like this may just be a minor issue for Keenum. If he sees upgraded practice time on Thursday, that should bode well for him.
