Three takeaways from Redskins Week 3 loss to Bears on Monday Night Football
1. This may have been the end of the Jay Gruden era
At the very least, it’s the beginning of the end.
Losing is one thing. Losing at home is another. Losing a prime-time home game is yet another thing.
But losing by double-digits to a Bears team that scored 19 total points in the first two weeks of the season in front of a home stadium half-filled with Bears fans? That’s going to make Dan Snyder angry.
The Redskins haven’t played well under Jay Gruden in quite some time. They frequently make mistakes, commit tons of penalties, play with little energy, and are a predictable team on both sides of the ball.
Gruden is in his sixth season in charge of the team. At this point, mediocrity is not acceptable.
The Redskins may decide to move on from Gruden and this ugly game could be the impetus for it. Perhaps they’ll exercise restraint — the Redskins haven’t fired a head coach in-season since Norv Turner in 2000 — but it still seems that the team may decide to part with Gruden after this effort.
The one potential saving grace for Gruden is that they held the Bears to three points after halftime and were almost able to work themselves back into the game. We’ll see if that late push was enough to save his job.
Either way, Gruden won’t last beyond this season. And at this point, it seems more likely that he will be fired in-season than not.
