Three takeaways from Redskins Week 3 loss to Bears on Monday Night Football
2. The defense needs to be completely retooled
So far this season, the Washington Redskins has been a far cry from the potential top-10 unit that some expected going into the season. Were the expectations a bit lofty? Sure. But on paper, the team had the talent needed to be a solid stop unit.
Instead, they have been one of the worst defenses in the league.
The secondary can’t cover. Josh Norman has been constantly torched and will almost certainly be cut this offseason. Landon Collins has been a great tackler, but with so many issues surrounding him, he hasn’t provided as much of an impact as many were hoping.

The defensive line has been better, but they also haven’t lived up to expectations. The team got some pressure on Mitchell Trubisky early in the game, but they failed to do anything after a certain point and that put the ‘Skins behind the eight-ball thanks to their poor coverage ability.
The linebackers have played about as expected for the Redskins. Given that they were expected to be the defense’s weakness, that isn’t great. Cole Holcomb has potential, but the unit as a whole still hasn’t been great in coverage.
As it stands, this defense doesn’t look competitive and they may need to retool. They’ll need a new coordinator. They could use a true three-down linebacker. And they definitely need some help at cornerback. Still, their upside is apparent, as seen in the second half, so they don’t need to be completely blown up. They just need some reinforcements. But those may not come until after the season.
And even if they come now, they may not have a major impact on the team.
