Report: Redskins offered Brandon Scherff $13 million a year extension
By Ian Cummings
Per reports, the Redskins have offered Brandon Scherff an extension worth approximately $13 million a year.
The Washington Redskins and Brandon Scherff have engaged in a tepid contractual saga for the past eight months or so. It was reported at the start of the 2019 offseason that the Redskins intended to at least entertain the idea of extending Scherff, and the considerable extension that came with that course of action.
Despite these reports, the summer passed without word of any progress in contract extension talks between Scherff and Washington’s front office, and until now, there was no word on whether or not the two sides had even discussed such matters. Now, however, we have reports that Scherff’s camp has fielded an offer, ranging around $13 million a year. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported the news.
The extension would be a slight pay increase from Scherff’s current salary of approximately $12.5 million, which was instated after the Redskins enacted his fifth-year option. As offensive line analyst Brandon Thorn noted, Scherff would likely command more than $13 million a year on the open market, given his prestige.
At the very least, the $13 million annual offer from the Redskins would serve as a starting point in talks with Brandon Scherff, but Bruce Allen has been known to turn players away with “lowball” offers. It’s unclear if that will be the case with Scherff, but we at least know that there is action on one front.
Scherff, 27, is in the midst of his fifth NFL season with the Redskins, after he was selected at No. 5 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft. Scherff, since that time, has developed into one of football’s elite interior blockers, and he earned Pro Bowl honors in 2016 and 2017. A pectoral injury ended his 2018 season prematurely, but he’s since returned to action, and picked up where he left off.
Losing Scherff would be a major blow for a Redskins offensive line that’s already seen Trent Williams walk away and Morgan Moses continually regress. For now, the situation remains unresolved, but perhaps Washington’s offer will doom more dominoes to fall.
