Redskins release TE Donald Parham from practice squad, sign TE Drew Belcher
The Washington Redskins have made a move on their practice squad. They have swapped the services of tight end Donald Parham in exchange for tight end Drew Belcher.
The Washington Redskins made another small tweak to their roster on Tuesday afternoon. The team has been dealing with some injury issues at the tight end position in recent weeks and after losing J.P. Holtz to the Chicago Bears on waivers
While they didn’t add another tight end to the active roster, they swapped out the tight end that they are carrying on the practice squad.
After signing to the practice squad last week, the Redskins released Donald Parham. The 6-foot-8 Stetson product spent most of the offseason with the ‘Skins after going undrafted and spending a brief period of time with the Detroit Lions. Parham wasn’t able to do much during the preseason despite the tools he had, so it’s not a surprise to see his time on the practice squad be short-lived.

The player that the Redskins signed to replace Parham was Drew Belcher. Belcher played collegiately at Maine, starting out his career as a quarterback before eventually converting to the tight end position. He spent the preseason with the Arizona Cardinals and has been unsigned since final cuts.
Belcher (6-3, 250 pounds) has solid size and is a very good athlete. It will be interesting to see how the Redskins plan to use him. The Redskins are thin at tight end, and now he’ll just be a phone call away if the team decides to elevate him to have him serve as the third tight end on the roster.
It will also be interesting to see if the ‘Skins opt to use Belcher as a scout-team quarterback this week. He has a similar frame to Mitchell Trubisky, the Bears starter, so perhaps he could help the team give some different looks on that front. Either way, he will get a chance to prove himself with Washington.
On a more personal note, I actually grew up in the same town as Belcher and went to high school with him. It’s pretty cool to see him getting this opportunity.
We’ll soon see how things shake out for Belcher, but he’s a solid upside candidate at the tight end position who could eventually have a Holtz-like impact if given more time to develop.
