Bottom of the Barrel

These teams aren’t likely to be contenders this season barring something miraculous. They will likely be picking early in the 2020 NFL Draft.

27. New York Jets (0-2) – Previously 18. The Jets lost Sam Darnold to mono. Then Trevor Siemian suffered a brutal-looking injury on Monday Night Football. They have Luke Falk at quarterback. Even with the rest of their roster being better than it was in 2018, they can’t overcome these massive losses.

29. New York Giants (0-2) – Previously 28. The Giants are finally at least considering benching Eli Manning in favor of Daniel Jones. Until that happens and because of their awful defense, they will have to be considered one of the league’s worst teams.

30. Washington Redskins (0-2) – Previously 27. It’s time to start moving the Redskins down this list. While there was some hope that their defense would be able to help them win, that unit has been a massive disappointment so far. They weren’t able to hold onto leads they had against the Eagles and Cowboys as a result of their inability to coverage downfield.

Even worse, injuries have already cost them the services of Derrius Guice, Fabian Moreau, Quinton Dunbar, and Caleb Brantley. The team can’t afford to sustain issues like that. And on offense, the team can’t block (Morgan Moses has badly regressed) and Case Keenum has been merely decent since his excellent first half against the Eagles. All told, the Redskins seem to be on their way to a top-five pick unless they can turn things around against the Bears and Giants in the upcoming weeks.

31. Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) – Previously 31. Credit where credit is due, the Bengals hung tough with Seattle on the road to open their season. But they followed that up with a brutal home loss to the 49ers where their defense couldn’t tackle anyone. The Bengals are rebuilding and likely will have a top-five pick next year. The only question is whether they’d spend the pick on a quarterback or if fourth-round pick Ryan Finley will get a chance to take the reins later this season.

32. Miami Dolphins (0-2) – Previously 32. Based on how the Dolphins have played in the first two games, it would be surprising to see them win a game at all this season. They traded away all their talent, can’t block, have little ability on defense, and haven’t been trying at all in their first two games. They have been outscored 102-10 so far, and that margin should only get worse as the season goes along.

We’ll continue to update these rankings as the season goes along. But for now, this is how the league’s 32 teams fall.
