Average At Best Teams

All of these squads have some solid aspects of their team, but they simply aren’t built for postseason success as currently constructed.

24. Oakland Raiders (1-1) – Previously 29. The Raiders defense looked inspired against the Broncos in their opener and through one quarter against the Chiefs. Their defense is underrated, but they’re still too much of a work-in-progress to be trusted as a playoff threat. Derek Carr’s up-and-down performance doesn’t help their cause in that category either, but it at least appears that the team is on the right track after moving on from the spectacle that was Antonio Brown’s time with the team.

25. Detroit Lions (1-0-1) – Previously 30. The Lions are undefeated, but they should’ve beaten the Cardinals before tying and were barely able to beat the Chargers at home. The team is better than they were last year — Matthew Stafford and the offense are looking particularly fine — but they aren’t yet ready to compete for a playoff spot.

26. Arizona Cardinals (0-1-1) – Previously 25. Kyler Murray has shown an ability to keep his team competitive early on in his NFL career. However, the team can’t block on offense and their secondary is still weak with Patrick Peterson suspended. They could improve as Murray gets more experience and they will keep games close. But that may not translate into a lot of wins.

27. Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2) – Previously 13. The Jaguars take a nosedive in these rankings, and part of it is no fault of their own. The team lost quarterback Nick Foles to a broken collarbone in the first week of the season, and that should derail them the rest of the year. The injury alone would have pushed them into the early 20s, but their lack of defensive discipline and inability to establish the run knock them down quite a bit. Perhaps Gardner Minshew can get them some wins (he almost led them to a win over the Texans) but for now, it’s hard to trust the Jaguars.
