The Washington Redskins have signed receiver Robert Davis back to the active roster while placing running back Derrius Guice and defensive lineman Caleb Brantley on IR.

We haven’t even played the second game of the NFL season and the injuries are already starting to mount for the Washington Redskins.

Ahead of their Week 2 game with the Dallas Cowboys, the Redskins were short on available players on their roster. Defensive lineman Jonathan Allen and tight end Jordan Reed were already declared out against the Cowboys and that was in addition to players like Colt McCoy, Derrius Guice, and Caleb Brantley all likely to miss multiple weeks as well.

As a result, the Redskins were forced to make some roster moves to ensure that they have enough healthy bodies on the 53-man roster.

The first moves were to place running back Derrius Guice on defensive lineman Caleb Brantley on Injured Reserve. The decision to place Guice there was an expected one, as the second-year running back was dealing with a meniscus tear that was expected to keep him out 6-8 weeks. The team has no incentive to rush him back, so placing him on IR removed the temptation to do that.

As for Brantley, he had been dealing with a Lisfranc injury since the middle of the preseason. Lisfranc injuries can be difficult to heal from, as we have previously seen with Jonathan Allen, so placing him on IR makes sense.

To replace these two, the Redskins called up receiver Robert Davis from the practice squad and signed cornerback Aaron Colvin to the 53-man roster. Davis was a preseason standout who made the team only to be waived in favor of tight end depth when Reed was confirmed to be out for Week 1. But with J.P. Holtz now gone, Davis will have a chance to serve as the team’s sixth receiver and could be active on game day if they roll with just two tight ends.

As for Colvin, he was a member of the Houston Texans until Tuesday morning. The Texans parted ways with him after he made a mistake in the team’s Monday night loss to the New Orleans Saints. He had signed a four-year, $34 million deal with the team during the 2018 offseason and while he never played great in Houston, he still has upside. Washington did well to land him on the cheap and if he can play as he did for the Jacksonville Jaguars to start his career, the team will be ecstatic.

In addition to these moves, the Redskins added cornerback Deion Harris to the team’s practice squad. Harris spent the offseason with the team and has solid size, so he’s worth stashing.

These moves were fine ones for the Redskins, and Colvin and Davis both have upside. But the reality is that the team is once again dealing with injury problems and we are only a couple of weeks into the season. If they have to keep signing players off the street, like Colvin, to play roles for the team, it could quickly become a long season for the Redskins.
