Report: Redskins sign cornerback Simeon Thomas off Seahawks practice squad
The Washington Redskins have added a new defensive back to their roster. They signed cornerback Simeon Thomas off the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad.
After Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season, the Washington Redskins are already making some tweaks to their roster. And this time, they are coming in the secondary.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Redskins are signing cornerback Simeon Thomas off the Seahawks’ practice squad. Thomas was a sixth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft and has spent almost all of his career on the practice squad.
Thomas (6-foot-3, 197 pounds) is a big-bodied cornerback with good length. He played sparingly in his first two years in college at Louisiana, but then emerged as a contributor during his final two seasons. He had 82 total tackles, two interceptions, and 17 passes defensed over 22 games in those seasons.

Thomas will provide the Redskins with a potential-packed cornerback with a big, physical frame. In essence, he gives the team what they were hoping to get in Adonis Alexander, who is currently on the practice squad. But Thomas is a fresh face, so they will see what type of work they can do with him moving forward.
It’s also notable that the team added a cornerback, as that could bring up some concerns about Fabian Moreau. The team’s top slot cornerback has been out with a foot injury since the preseason and he missed Week 1. This move could indicate that he needs more time to heal. And if that’s the case, perhaps he could land on short-term IR.
By adding Thomas to the roster, this should virtually confirm that the Redskins are going to go with five receivers moving forward. They did waive Robert Davis to add tight end JP Holtz to the squad to start the season, but they landed Davis again and signed him to the practice squad. So, they’ll keep him stashed there and may call up the preseason star if they need depth.
It’s unclear what the corresponding move to adding Thomas to the roster was. It’s possible that if Jordan Reed has passed concussion protocol that the team would waive Holtz and bring him back to the practice squad. And as mentioned earlier, the team could put Moreau on short-term IR if he’s not progressing as hoped.
Of course, fans will also be eager to hear if this has anything to do with running back Derrius Guice, who is dealing with a meniscus injury that could keep him out for a few weeks. If the Redskins don’t want to rush him back, they could place him on IR and designate him for return when he gets healthy. At the moment, that still seems unlikely but until we know the official details of the injury and its timeline, we won’t know for sure.
We’ll keep an eye on any roster moves the Redskins make in the coming days. But for now, Simeon Thomas is the newest member of the ‘Skins as they prepare for a Week 2 clash with the Dallas Cowboys.
