Redskins Injury Report: Jordan Reed among three questionable players
The Washington Redskins have a handful of injuries to keep an eye on ahead of their 2019 NFL season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Jordan Reed (concussion) is among them.
With less than 48 hours left until the Redskins kick off the 2019 season, the team is still sorting out a few key injuries. They have already ruled quarterback Colt McCoy and top slot cornerback Fabian Moreau out for the opener, and there are three key players that will enter the weekend with the dreaded “questionable” designation.
Of the bunch, the top player is Jordan Reed. The long-time Redskins tight end had what was, by all accounts, a great offseason. However, in his lone preseason action, he took a shot to the head from Atlanta Falcons safety Keanu Neal. That would eventually knock him out of the game and make his status questionable for the opener.
As of Friday, Reed still hadn’t been cleared for full contact as part of the NFL’s concussion protocol. The team should have an answer about his status on Saturday morning, but given that this is his seventh documented concussion, there are no guarantees that he will be ready to play in the opener.

If Reed can’t play, Vernon Davis and Jeremy Sprinkle will be the lone two tight ends on the roster unless the team calls up JP Holtz from the practice squad. If they do make a roster move like that, it should indicate that Reed won’t be on the field against the Eagles.
Elsewhere, the team is dealing with a couple of injuries on defense. Defensive lineman Caleb Brantley (Lisfranc) and edge rusher Cassanova McKinzy (concussion) are both listed as questionable. That said, McKinzy seemed to be progressing well from the injury he suffered in the team’s preseason finale, so he should have a chance to play.
As for Brantley, that is a little less clear. Lisfranc injuries are often tough and for and explosion-based interior pass-rushing option like Brantley, having full use of his feet will be critical. The team may hold him out as a precaution while giving the newly-signed former Eagle Treyvon Hester a chance to serve as the team’s fifth defensive lineman.
We’ll soon see what Washington has planned, but it’s obviously not a great sign that they already have a handful of important players on the injury report for Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season.
