Fabian Moreau, Colt McCoy both likely out for Redskins opener
The Redskins are dealing with some injuries ahead of their first contest of the season. Right now, it looks like Fabian Moreau and Colt McCoy will both miss the first game of the season.
The Redskins have had bad injury luck in recent seasons. And so far to start the 2019 campaign, they are dealing with a couple of injuries that could keep some key veterans out of the lineup.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden confirmed that the team would be without veteran quarterback Colt McCoy. The six-year Redskin has been dealing with complications from a broken leg that he suffered in last year’s Week 13 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was expected to fight for the starting role during the preseason but couldn’t get on the field. Thus, it makes sense that he won’t be in action.
With McCoy not playing, rookie Dwayne Haskins will backup veteran Case Keenum. Haskins showed growth throughout the preseason, but the Redskins want to give him more time to adjust to the NFL before putting him on the field. In all likelihood, if McCoy was healthy, he would be active to start the season with Haskins learning in the third-string role.

Elsewhere on the roster, the team seems likely to be without cornerback Fabian Moreau. He has been dealing with a foot injury and wasn’t at practice on Wednesday. According to ESPN’s John Keim, Moreau is a longshot to play in Week 1 as a result.
With Moreau likely out, the door will be open for rookie seventh-round pick Jimmy Moreland to take on a bigger role in the slot. Moreland had a great preseason and was constantly making splash plays by forcing fumbles, breaking up passes, and making tackles behind the line of scrimmage. That said, he did have issues at times in coverage against bigger receivers, so he may have some growing pains. But if he can force some game-changing plays, the Redskins will be happy with his production.
In addition to these two, Jordan Reed (concussion) is still questionable despite returning to practice on Wednesday. And, oh yeah, Trent Williams isn’t going to be playing either.
As the game draws nearer, we’ll certainly know more about which ‘Skins will be available to start the season and who might end up on the inactives list.
