Redskins sign former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Treyvon Hester to 53-man roster
The Washington Redskins have filled one of the available spots on their 53-man roster by signing former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Treyvon Hester.
The Redskins roster is nearly complete. Though the team had their initial 53-man unit formed as of Saturday afternoon, there are a couple of open spots.
The team placed running back Shaun Wilson and edge rusher Jordan Brailford on the IR after final cuts. By doing so, they gave the young duo an option to return later in the season. And, they gave themselves a chance to find some other players to keep on the roster.
According to the team’s official website, they did add one player to compete on defense. The team signed former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Treyvon Hester to the roster. Hester, 26, was among the Eagles’ final roster cuts but went unclaimed on waivers.

Hester has spent two seasons in the NFL, seeing action with the Oakland Raiders in 2017 and the Eagles in 2018. All told, he has logged 32 tackles and a sack in 26 regular season games as a rotational interior defender.
Notably, Hester was the Eagles player who was able to get a fingertip on Cody Parkey‘s field goal attempt in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs last season. That cost Parkey his job and ended up creating the legendary “double-doink” play that nearly sparked another Philadelphia playoff run.
The Redskins already have a strong defensive line, so signing Hester may seem to be an odd move. That said, Caleb Brantley is still recovering from a Lisfranc injury, so it’s possible that he may not be ready for the season opener. While some may have rather seen a player like undrafted rookie Ryan Bee take his spot if Brantley is injured, Hester has NFL experience and has proven to be a rock-solid rotational player. And that may be what the team wants for their depth spots.
Hester is an intriguing player with a nice overall skill set. Adding him was a sensible move, especially given that the Redskins and Eagles are squaring off this week. Perhaps the team is adding Eagles to their roster (like Hester and Wendell Smallwood) as part of a pre-Week 1 reconnaissance mission. Either way, they’ve landed two quality depth players and still have one more spot to fill.
