DL JoJo Wicker

Could the Redskins keep two defensive linemen on the practice squad? It certainly seems possible. After all, they have some talent at the position and if they elect to keep just five on the roster, keeping some extra depth handy would be sensible.

JoJo Wicker didn’t quite make the cut for the Redskins, but he did spend time with the team last season and made their initial practice squad despite being a late preseason signing in 2018. And after another good preseason, he has a case to make it again.

Wicker was one of the Redskins’ standouts in the preseason finale, but it evidently wasn’t enough to get him on the final roster. Here’s what I said about Wicker after the game against Baltimore.

More from Riggo's Rag

"Wicker was able to consistently get pressure on the Ravens quarterbacks and notched a sack on the evening. However, his best play came when he burst through the line on a third and goal, split the blockers, and brought the Ravens’ running back down two yards behind the line of scrimmage. It was an impressive, instinctive play that showed off his solid burst, so that should get him some love with roster cuts looming. Given that the Redskins already have a very strong defensive line group, Wicker may still have a tough time making the roster. But at this point, he could end up being the sixth defensive lineman that the team keeps if they choose to do so. He and Bee will battle for that role with one or both potentially landing on the practice squad. That seems to be Wicker’s likely destination at this point in time."

Turns out that well may be correct. With the depth on the defensive line, keeping Wicker on the active roster simply wasn’t possible. But keeping him around on the practice squad should intrigue coach Gruden, especially if Wicker has more time to work with Tomsula.
