WR Cam Sims

The Redskins opted to go with quite a few young, unproven players at the receiver position on their final roster. They kept six players, but five of the six players have combined for 9 total NFL receptions.

Despite the team’s willingness to go with unproven players, Cam Sims didn’t quite make the cut. Sims got a lot of buzz training camp, but he just couldn’t quite do enough in the preseason to stave off the competition at the position.

As our own Ian Cummings pointed out, parting with Sims wasn’t an easy decision. But it was one that the Redskins ended up having to make.

"Sims is one of the biggest receivers in the league at 6-foot-5, and while he was inconsistent, he did show promise in preseason on occasion, and last preseason, he led the NFL in receiving yards. The decision to cut Sims must have been a challenging conclusion to come to. But given the closeness of this year’s receiver battle, any error at all could send someone down the pecking order. Sims had multiple drops in the preseason finale, and he was never able to resurrect his success from last summer."

This is the main reason that Sims didn’t make the roster. But, he still has the size and raw tools needed to develop into a solid receiver. That makes him a nice practice squad option for the Redskins. If he clears waivers, they should certainly look to keep him around.
