The Redskins have a lot of receivers, and not a lot of spots to use on receivers. Consequently, they had to let go of at least one good prospect.

The Washington Redskins have seen plenty of promising bids from their receivers this preseason, and outside of the starting trio of Terry McLaurin, Paul Richardson, and Trey Quinn, nothing is truly set in stone.

At various points in preseason, Darvin Kidsy, Robert Davis, Cam Sims, and Steven Sims Jr. all made plays to suggest that they’d be worth spending a roster spot on. Steven Sims Jr. was the most recent riser, and it appears the Redskins were keen enough on his performance as a special teamer to award him a roster spot.

Sims’ ascension was warranted in some respects, as his value as a returner is something not many can match. But it also means that someone else is set to be let go. And not long ago, we received an answer as who that was, from the receiver himself.

Cam Sims sent out a cryptic tweet shortly after the announcement of Steven Sims’ success, containing a single “waving hand” emoticon. Sims promptly deleted the tweet, but the response was overwhelming in minutes. D.C. Sports reporter Craig Hoffman quote-tweeted Sims’ post here.

John Keim reported shortly after Sims’ tweet that Sims had indeed been cut. This development is undoubtedly a disappointment. Sims is one of the biggest receivers in the league at 6-foot-5, and while he was inconsistent, he did show promise in preseason on occasion, and last preseason, he led the NFL in receiving yards.

The decision to cut Sims must have been a challenging conclusion to come to. But given the closeness of this year’s receiver battle, any error at all could send someone down the pecking order. Sims had multiple drops in the preseason finale, and he was never able to resurrect his success from last summer. Stick with us here at Riggo’s Rag for more news as cuts continue to filter in.
