No. 1 – Redskins LT Trent Williams

Trent Williams isn’t going to come back today. DeAngelo Hall said as much earlier in the week when he reported on a podcast that there was “no chance” that Williams would return within seven days. Williams’ holdout is set to continue, and for the time being, there’s no end in sight.

Today represents, at the very least, a symbolic threshold; when Williams does not come back today, he will have remained on hold out past the formation of the Redskins active 53-man roster. Williams did not sign his current contract extension as an unrestricted free agent, so it’s unclear if the Redskins have the ability to recoup any more money from his contract. For now, the two sides are at a dense impasse. And it doesn’t look like either side will budge.

While Williams stays away, Bruce Allen exuded an unfounded confidence in a recent interview, stating that he expected Williams to be back. It’s all too clear, however, that Williams will not be back any time soon, if at all, and the reasonable thing to do would be to try and acquire assets for one of the best tackles in the game, via trade. But pride can be a dangerous motivator in a front office setting, and it’s quite possible that pride is what’s motivating Allen to cling so stubbornly to an empty set of pads.

There’s a remote possibility that a trade could occur today. Players are moving, and teams are finalizing their rosters, and a team with the desire to field their best roster from Week 1 could hit the Redskins with a tempting offer. After the Texans reportedly offered the Dolphins a first-round pick and Jadeveon Clowney for Laremy Tunsil, Williams’ value could skyrocket, if the Redskins went all-in on dealing him elsewhere.

As of now, however, there’s little movement on that front, and if cut day passes with no resolution, take it as a sign, that there will be many more days like this one in the future. Make sure you keep checking in on our live cuts tracker, as we’ll be updating it regularly throughout the day.
