Redskins Roster Cuts Tracker: Latest news on all players released by Washington

The Washington Redskins are going to have to cut 37 players from their 90-man roster by 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. Here are the latest updates on all of their transactions.

NFL cut day wasn’t always as big as it is now. Just a few years ago, teams had a mandatory cut to 75 players midway through the preseason in an effort to make the final trim a bit easier. But now, teams are allowed to keep 90 players on their roster up until the final Saturday before the NFL season at 4:00 p.m. ET. And that time is almost here.

Now that the NFL preseason is over, teams are finally going to be trimming their roster down to 53 men after spending most of the offseason at or around the 90-man mark. That means some critical roster decisions and a lot of tough cuts involving roster bubble guys.

This year, the Redskins’ final cuts are a bit more unpredictable. A couple of players are dealing with concussions while Colt McCoy is also attempting to return from a nagging leg injury that he suffered last season. The concussion issues could cause the team to keep some extra players at the spots effected, as concussions are tricky injuries to deal with.

Meanwhile, McCoy’s status bears watching, as he could be a candidate for the Injured Reserve with a designated to return. In order to receive that tag, McCoy would have to initially make the 53-man roster and then be placed on IR with the possibility of being reactivated midway through the season. Either way, the team seems likely to keep him…it’s just a matter of whether or not he will be healthy to start the season.

Friday

2:43 p.m. ET: The Redskins have been silent during roster cuts so far, but that’s not too surprising. Only a handful of players have been released from certain teams so far. And last year, the Redskins didn’t cut a single player on Friday. We’ll see if they follow suit this year and don’t leak anything until Saturday.

6:52 p.m. ET: It’s still all quiet on the Redskins front. Take some time to vote in our roster hopefuls poll to help pass the time before cuts really get underway!

11:50 p.m. ET: Okay, I think it’s safe to say that the Redskins aren’t going to make any cuts until Saturday. We’ll likely start hearing things earlier in the morning. And for reference, we heard of the first cut last year around 9:35 a.m. on Saturday.

Saturday

8:55 a.m. ET: The Redskins have officially started making cuts. Per D.C. Sports reporter Craig Hoffman, undrafted rookie ILB Gary Johnson, formerly of Texas, has been released, and per ESPN’s John Keim, defensive lineman Austin Maloata has been released as well. Johnson was signed late in preseason, and while he has intriguing physical traits, he didn’t have enough time to establish himself. Maloata, meanwhile, was buried on the defensive line depth chart by preseason standouts such as Ryan Bee and JoJo Wicker. Both are potential practice squad additions.

9:05 a.m. ET: The Redskins have also released defensive lineman JoJo Wicker, according to D.C. sports reporter Ben Standig. Wicker attended college at Arizona State and signed a futures contract with the Redskins in late December last year. He had a standout performance in the team’s final preseason game, but he wasn’t consistent enough throughout the four-game stretch to earn a spot in a very deep position group.

9:14 a.m. ET: Jojo McIntosh is the next player to be cut by the Redskins. McIntosh signed with the Redskins as an undrafted free agent out of Washington University. He possessed intriguing special teams upside, but that wasn’t enough to earn a roster spot. As Ian Rapoport noted, McIntosh received the second-highest UDFA bonus among Redskins signees this year.

9:20 a.m. ET: Two more cuts, this time both on offense. The Redskins have released TE Donald Parham and OL Jerald Foster. Parham is the most notable, as his 6-foot-8 frame immediately stood out as a unique trait upon signing. He got a chance to show off some of his receiving upside in the fourth preseason game, but he did not earn a roster spot. As of now, all players released thus far are eligible for the practice squad, but the Redskins are limited in who they can sign.

9:31 a.m. ET: The Redskins have released TE Matt Flanagan. Flanagan joined the team as an undrafted free agent last offseason, and spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad. He did catch one pass for 14 yards against Jacksonville, but he was never able to latch on to a greater role. At 6-foot-6, he’s another tight end with intriguing size, but drops were ultimately his undoing in preseason.

9:42 a.m. ET: The Redskins have released former AAF standout Andrew Ankrah. Ankrah was signed shortly after the folding of the Alliance of American Football, but he was never able to stand out against second and third-team competition.

9:54 a.m. ET: Cornerback Ashton Lampkin has been released by Washington. The former undrafted free agent had a good performance against the Bengals, but didn’t do enough to beat the numbers game at the position. ESPN’s John Keim first had the news.

10:12 a.m. ET: Two offensive linemen are now out the door. As Ben Standig and John Keim respectively reported, the Redskins have released OT Blake Hance and OG Hugh Thornton. Hance was an undrafted free agent rookie who played primarily against second and third-team competition in preseason. The same can be said for Thornton, who was a third-round selection of Ryan Grigson back in 2013. Thornton was attempting to mount a comeback bid after retiring and playing in the AAF for a spell. His bid will have to resume somewhere else.

10:22 a.m. ET: According to Ben Standig of The Athletic, the Redskins are cutting reserve cornerback Deion Harris. Harris never really gained any footing in a crowded cornerback room and had issues with penalties in the preseason.

10:25 a.m. ET: The Redskins have parted ways with defensive lineman Khairi Clark, per Keim. The former Florida Gator was a late preseason add amid minor injuries to the team’s defensive line.

10:28 a.m. ET: John Keim has some great news for all the Steven Sims Jr. fans out there.

10:32 p.m. ET: Zac Kerin is the latest Redskins roster cut per Kareem Copeland of The Washington Post. Kerin joined the team last year after the team suffered countless injuries at the guard position but struggled to gain any footing this year with the team.

10:45 p.m. ET: Bad news for the Ryan Bee hive (sorry, I had to do it). John Keim is reporting that Bee has been released by the Redskins but notes that he will have a chance to make the practice squad if he doesn’t end up on another roster. A team could take a chance on the productive 6-foot-7 defensive end who flashed this preseason but if not, the Redskins will retain him. Bee’s release means that the Redskins will go with five defensive linemen (Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen, Matt Ioannidis, Tim Settle, and Caleb Brantley) on their 53-man roster.

10:55 p.m. ET: It looks like hybrid linebacker Marquis Flowers is being cut. He posted this on Twitter and seemed to indicate that he would be going elsewhere.

11:15 a.m. ET: Please enjoy dissecting this cryptic tweet from Cam Sims. (UPDATE: Sims has deleted the Tweet. It was a single emoji of a hand waving so that seemingly doesn’t bode well for him moving forward).

11:25 a.m. ET: Kareem Copeland is now reporting that the Redskins have cut running back Craig Reynolds but are hoping to get him on the practice squad. This is far from a surprise. Reynolds looked good in the preseason but needs to develop before he can be considered for an NFL roster.

11:30 a.m. ET: The Redskins have, in fact, moved on from Cam Sims according to John Keim. Sims’ cryptic tweet certainly indicated his release. He had a great camp but didn’t perform as well on teh field in the preseason. He dropped a number of passes in the finale against the Ravens and that may have sealed his fate. Now, we’ll see if the team tries to stash him on the practice squad.

11:45 a.m. ET: Josh Doctson is no longer going to be a member of the Washington Redskins by 4:00 p.m. today. He’s either going to be traded or cut according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

11:48 a.m. ET: The Redskins are likely going to run with three offensive tackles. They have cut Timon Parris according to Ben Standig, so unless they grab a player off waivers, it seems likely they will carry extra help on the interior in the form of Tony Bergstrom. Keep an eye on a guy like offensive tackle Dan Skipper, a Patriots lineman who could have swing-tackle upside. But for now, it’s Donald Penn, Morgan Moses, and Geron Christian vs. the world (unless Trent Williams decides to return which is highly unlikely).

11:55 a.m. ET: Here’s a somewhat surprising cut: The Redskins have released safety Jeremy Reaves, per John Keim. The 23-year-old had a really solid preseason and some thought he would make the final roster. Maybe he’ll make the practice squad, but this move certainly signifies confidence in the team’s safety depth.

11:58 a.m. ET: Craig Hoffman is reporting that Robert Davis has made the roster. Another young player with athletic upside and special teams ability gets the nod over Doctson.

12:07 p.m. ET: The Redskins are waiving cornerback Adonis Alexander according to NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay. Alexander has intriguing traits and size (6-foot-3) but he has shown practically nothing since being a sixth-round supplemental draft pick in 2018. They’ll hope to get him on the practice squad but he could be scooped by a corner-needy team.

12:24 p.m. ET: Bookkeeping note: Marquis Flowers has been released by the Redskins, as his tweet did confirm that. The hybrid linebacker could’ve stuck around as a versatile depth option but the team parted with him.

12:30 p.m. ET: For the second consecutive year, JP Holtz is cut on cut day by the Redskins, per Craig Hoffman. Some thought that he could make the team as a fourth tight end with Jordan Reed dealing with a concussion. This would seemingly suggest that they are confident that Reed can be healthy to start the season. Holtz should be a practice squad candidate.

12:55 p.m. ET: The Redskins have released Samaje Perine according to John Keim. Perine was a favorite of Jay Gruden this offseason but never gained any momentum in the preseason. Perine’s time with the team is likely done but it will be interesting to see if he lands on a practice squad anywhere. With Perine not making the team, Byron Marshall will take the fourth RB spot despite mostly struggling outside of the fourth preseason game.

1:02 p.m. ET: According to John Keim, the Redskins have released linebacker BJ Blunt. He showed good energy and effort during the preseason but still needs to develop as he only moved to linebacker as a college senior. He should have a great chance to make the practice squad.

1:17 p.m. ET: Per Keim, the Redskins have parted ways with Brian Quick. The veteran receiver was cut midway through last season but returned to the roster this offseason. His roster chances were always slim.

1:28 p.m. ET: The Redskins have also parted ways with offensive tackle Corey Robinson, per Ben Standig. Robinson, a former starter for Detroit and Jacksonville, was signed during training camp along with Donald Penn. While he has starting experience, he was never seen as more than low-caliber depth.

1:50 p.m. ET: Not a roster cut, but it seems as though the Redskins will initially keep RB Shaun Wilson on the 53-man roster. If they keep him after the 4:00 PM deadline, he’s eligible to go on injured reserve with a designation to return at some point in the season. The Redskins value his speed and dynamic ability, to the point where they want him to be available when he’s healthy. This does mean that once he goes on IR, they’ll be able to fill his spot again.

2:01 p.m. ET: J.P. Finlay shared word from his sources that the Redskins only plan to keep four inside linebackers: Shaun Dion Hamilton, Josh Harvey-Clemons, Jon Bostic, and Cole Holcomb. This report implies that Marquis Flowers did not make the cut. Flowers was one of our Unheralded Players earlier in the offseason. Finlay also reported that four outside linebackers is the plan as well, so Marcus Smith seems to be a roster cut as well.

2:06 p.m. ET: Unsurprisingly, quarterback Jalan McClendon has been released. The undrafted free agent rookie was signed during the preseason to serve as depth while Colt McCoy was injured. His release likely signals that McCoy is nearing recovery and that the team is likely to keep three quarterbacks rostered.
