Report: Texans have made contact with Redskins about potential Jadeveon Clowney trade
According to a report, the Houston Texans have contacted the Washington Redskins about a potential Jadeveon Clowney trade. This shouldn’t be read into very much.
While the Washington Redskins faithful have been focused on Trent Williams as one of the bigger names potentially on the trade block as the NFL season approaches, there is another top-tier player that could be on the move. That would Houston Texans edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney.
Clowney, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, was slapped with the franchise tag this offseason but the Texans seem reluctant to pay him long-term. That has caused a contract impasse that could last into the regular season. Unless, of course, the Texans are willing to trade him for either some future assets or other pieces that could help them to win now.
The Texans have been shopping Clowney more over the past couple of weeks and according to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle, the team has made contact with several teams regarding a Clowney trade. They include the Miami Dolphins, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles…

And the Washington Redskins.
Of course, Wilson’s report merely notes that the Texans have contacted the Redskins regarding a trade. It doesn’t say that the Redskins had any interest in making a deal. And frankly, the team may not be interested in adding Clowney despite his obvious pass-rushing talents (at least 9.0 sacks in each of the last two seasons).
The Redskins seem to have a pretty solid rotation set on the edge. Ryan Kerrigan has long been one of the league’s underrated and consistent edge rushers, and he will get a chance to go for his third-straight 13 sack season in 2019. Across from him, first-round pick and freaky athlete Montez Sweat could start or rotate in with the excellent run-setting edge defender Ryan Anderson to create a formidable trio. And behind them, preseason star Cassanova McKinzy will have a chance to carve out a speed rushing role with his athletic ability and bend.
Clowney starting across from Kerrigan would certainly be intriguing. But would the Redskins really want to sink financial resources into a player at a position that they’re already largely set at? The answer would seemingly be no, so they may rebuff any attempt the Texans make to give them Clowney.
However, it is also important to note that the Texans are in win-now mode, so they may be trying to get some players in exchange for Clowney to stay competitive. They are starved for talent on the offensive line, so perhaps they tried dangling Clowney in exchange for Williams, who is still reportedly refusing to play for the team amid his holdout. Given the Redskins’ recent comments, it doesn’t seem likely that they would pull the trigger on that.
And as mentioned before, acquiring Clowney doesn’t make sense from a positional standpoint. If the team were to trade Williams, they would likely want draft capital or perhaps a top-tier receiver to add more weapons to their offense.
The Redskins being mentioned in Clowney talks is certainly of note, but one would have to imagine that this conversation may have been a one-sided affair. We’ll soon see where Clowney lands and whether or not the ‘Skins end up moving Williams.
