It looks like Trent Williams is, in fact, planning on continuing his holdout from the Washington Redskins. DeAngelo Hall confirmed as much while recounting a recent conversation with Williams.

The Washington Redskins and Bruce Allen are confident that Trent Williams will be returning to the team to play for the 2019 season.

However, it’s looking more and more likely that their overconfidence may be misplaced.

According to Williams’ former teammate and current NFL Network personality DeAngelo Hall, Williams isn’t going to be reporting to Washington ahead of the season. Hall recounted a conversation he had with Williams in a recent episode of Hail to the Podcast with his cohost, Erin Hawksworth.

"I reached out to (Trent Williams) and he’s like “There’s zero chance I’ll be in that building next week.”"

This certainly isn’t encouraging. Nor is it surprising. Throughout the holdout, Williams has made it clear that he no longer wants to play in Washington. Whether it’s about the money or the medical staff, he wants out. But it doesn’t appear that the Redskins are willing to let him go.

That said, Allen really needs to start shopping Williams more aggressively. With roster cuts upcoming and the season shortly behind, the ‘Skins are losing leverage in the trade market with each passing week. While it may benefit them to have Williams on the field at left tackle, it doesn’t seem like that will happen. So, they’re going to have to settle on offloading him for future pieces or perhaps in a deal that would include some current talent as well.

If Williams really won’t play for the Redskins, the team will gain very little from having the 31-year-old sit out the season. In fact, if he did sit out a full season, it could crater his trade value, as a team may be less willing to part with a significant asset for a 32-year-old tackle that hasn’t played in quite a while. So, the clock is ticking on Allen and the Redskins to figure out some solution.

If the ‘Skins can’t get Williams back in the building, it’s time to trade him. A tackle-needy team like the Houston Texans could be willing to sacrifice some significant assets for him. Washington could then roll with Donald Penn and look for a true successor to Williams in the 2020 NFL Draft, which appears to be stacked at tackle.
