The Washington Redskins made another small roster move on Sunday. They signed defensive lineman Khairi Clark while waiving defensive back DeJuan Neal.

The Redskins have made yet another small roster move as the 2019 NFL preseason drags on. This time around, the team is waiving a player that they recently signed in order to add more depth to their defensive line.

According to the Redskins’ official Twitter account, the team signed Florida defensive tackle Khairi Clark and waived defensive back DeJuan Neal. This move is likely just for depth purposes, but the move certainly makes sense.

Clark is an undrafted free agent who played his college ball at Florida. He sports a 6-foot-1, 309-pound frame and will likely play on the interior defensive line for the ‘Skins. Clark was a steady producer in a rotational capacity at Florida, logging between 13 and 16 tackles every year for the Gators and a single sack in each of his four campaigns for the team.

Clark’s addition is less about giving him a tryout ahead of the regular season and more about the Redskins needing some defensive line depth for the rest of the preseason. Last week, Tim Settle exited with a knee injury and while he is expected to be fine, the team may not want to risk further injury in Thursday night’s clash with the Atlanta Falcons. And with Caleb Brantley dealing with a Lisfranc injury, the team was a bit thin on the defensive line.

Conversely, the team is pretty much set at defensive back, so waiving Neal won’t make a big impact. Neal was always an outside candidate to make the practice squad after inking a deal with the team midway through the preseason. The Redskins evidently didn’t see enough out of him to keep him around. So, they decided to move on from him and give Clark a shot to prove himself.

If Clark can show well enough in limited action, an opportunity may exist for him to get a chance to make the practice squad. However, Clark isn’t a very good athlete (5.38-second 40-yard dash, 8.03-second 3-cone time), so it’s more likely that he will be a camp body for the ‘Skins.

This is likely just a swap of depth options, but we’ll keep an eye on Clark and the action he sees in the third preseason game against the Falcons. But for the time being, don’t expect much from him.
