Colt McCoy was supposed to factor into the Washington Redskins’ starting quarterback battle. But a leg injury has kept him out in recent weeks.

The Redskins quarterback battle seems to be a two-man race between Case Keenum and Dwayne Haskins with the veteran in the lead right now. At the beginning of the preseason, that wasn’t what many were expecting to see. Many thought the battle would be a true three-way race between Keenum, Haskins, and Colt McCoy.

However, McCoy hasn’t been able to play in the preseason due to an injury. He is still dealing with problems related to his surgically repaired right leg. McCoy initially suffered the injury, a broken leg, in the team’s Week 13 meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles last season.

Per ESPN’s John Keim, McCoy has visited a foot specialist, Dr. Robert Anderson, about his problem. McCoy has no timetable to return but reportedly, there have been no setbacks for the veteran.

As Keim points out, the issue with McCoy is related to his ability to push off on his leg in passing situations. So, obviously, that is a major issue for him and explains why he is still sidelined.

Though the prognosis for McCoy seems problematic, Jay Gruden said that he “doesn’t anticipate McCoy will be out too long.” However, that could be wishful thinking from Gruden, and he may soon have to make a decision about McCoy ahead of the cut to 53 men.

If McCoy is still far off from being ready to start the season on the active roster, the team could consider placing him on the IR with a designated for return tag. The squad could then give McCoy a couple of months to heal and bring him back midway through the season to serve as a backup or potential starter depending on the state of the quarterback position at that point in time. For those wondering, McCoy is ineligible for the PUP list so if he goes on an injury list, it will have to be the IR.

We’ll soon see what the team ends up doing with McCoy. But his inability to get on the field has certainly been frustrating for him. And it also has essentially taken him out of the starting quarterback battle.
