The Redskins have now long completed their preseason bout with the Bengals. But the conversation is very far from over.

In the win-loss column, the Washington Redskins added a second tally to the right side on Thursday, falling to the Cincinnati Bengals by a score of 13-23. If the main objective of preseason was to win, then the Redskins failed. If it was to develop players and build depth… well then the Redskins didn’t quite succeed entirely, either.

That said, there were some very encouraging developments from the Redskins second preseason game, both on offense and defense. The team’s rookie quarterback had showed himself to be a quick learner, using new crafty tools to improve his play under center. The Redskins starting defense looked good in limited action, and there were silver linings on the offensive line as well.

The second preseason game doesn’t spell the end of the team’ development period, but it is important that progress is tangible as the preseason plays out. The Redskins haven’t always been ready to compete at the start of the season; it’s been a common theme under Jay Gruden, and this year, even though the team might not be geared up to win meaningful games, there needs to be a competitive air about them.

With that in mind, how did Washington compete against a comparable team in the Bengals? What is there to make of Dwayne Haskins‘ second NFL game, and should he already be considered to start over Case Keenum? What’s good about the offensive line, and what’s bad? And what made Washington’s starting defense so encouraging? Jacob Camenker and I hopped back on the podcast to talk, and we basically covered everything. To listen, you can click the play button below!

A side note: In the podcast, I said at one point that Colt McCoy could start the season on the PUP list. That isn’t actually possible, as Jacob wrote earlier today. So that’s my bad. The adrenaline got to me. Heat of the moment.
