The first preseason game is in the books for the Redskins and it is time for a roster projection – even after a massive lambasting from the Cleveland Browns.

Trying to produce a Washington Redskins 53-man roster prediction seems a little easier than our first forecast back in May, but it is still a monumental task.  We didn’t see many of the probable starters againt the Browns and most of the first unit played just over one quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night.

The roster is far from set, as one player, Trent Williams, could be a long-term holdout and injuries could force changes as well.  Will there be any surprise cuts when we get to September?  Is Jimmy Moreland a lock to make the final cut?  Will the Redskins keep two or three quarterbacks?  Let’s take a look at this latest roster prediction.

Offense

In this list of offensive players, there are a few changes from our second roster prediction that was posted in late June.  New players that we still include are Dwayne Haskins, Wes Martin, and Terry McLaurin.  Players making it back to our roster projection include Robert Davis, Timon Parris, and Ereck Flowers.  We also include a huge surpriseAlex Smith continues to remain with the team, but he is still an obvious candidate for injured reserve status in 2019.

Quarterback:  Case Keenum (Projected Starter), Dwayne Haskins

Running Back:  Derrius Guice (Projected Starter), Adrian Peterson, Chris Thompson, Samaje Perine

Tight End:  Jordan Reed (Projected Starter), Vernon Davis, Jeremy Sprinkle

Wide Receiver:  Paul Richardson (Projected Starter), Terry McLaurin (Projected Starter), Trey Quinn (Slot), Josh Doctson, Kelvin Harmon, Robert Davis, Darvin Kidsy

Tackle:  Donald Penn (Projected Starter), Morgan Moses (Projected Starter), Geron Christian, Timon Parris

Guard:  Brandon Scherff (Projected Starter), Ereck Flowers (Projected Starter) Wes Martin, Tony Bergstrom (Center)

Center:  Chase Roullier (Projected Starter), Ross Pierschbacher (Guard)

Defense

The defense appears to be a deeply talented unit and there are some new players who will make their presence known this fall.  Players on this list who will be on the final roster of 53 include Montez Sweat, Cole Holcomb, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and Jimmy Moreland.  Reuben Foster has been placed on the injured reserve list and Jon Bostic takes his place.  Troy Apke has been added to the roster after careful consideration, but we have Danny Johnson going to the PUP list.

Defensive Line:  Daron Payne (Projected Starter), Jonathan Allen (Projected Starter), Matt Ioannidis (Projected Starter), Tim Settle, Caleb Brantley

Outside Linebacker:  Ryan Kerrigan (Projected Starter), Montez Sweat (Projected Starter), Ryan Anderson, Cassanova McKinzy, Jordan Brailford

Inside Linebacker:  Jon Bostic (Projected Starter), Shaun Dion Hamilton (Projected Starter), Josh Harvey-Clemons, Cole Holcomb

Cornerback:  Josh Norman (Projected Starter), Fabian Moreau (Projected Starter), Jimmy Moreland (Slot), Quinton Dunbar, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Free Safety?), Greg Stroman

Safety:  Landon Collins (Projected Starter), Montae Nicholson (Projected Starter), Deshazor Everett, Troy Apke

Special Teams

The three special teams players remain the same – this part of the prediction was the easiest.

Special Teams:  Dustin Hopkins, Tress Way, Nick Sundberg.

Injured Reserve

Alex Smith, QB.  Reuben Foster, ILB.  Josh Woodrum, QB, Colt McCoy (Predicted).

PUP List

Bryce Love, RB.  Danny Johnson, CB

Trade

Trent Williams, OT

Practice Squad

This part of the prediction is still extremely difficult.  Trying to list ten players who will be signed to the practice squad seems like an exercise in futility.  Omitting fan favorites is never fun, but popular players are likely to be cut and some will find their way to the practice squad.

Blake Hance (OT), Steven Sims (WR), Ryan Bee (DE/DT), Matt Flanagan (TE), Andrew Ankrah (Edge/OLB), Jeremy Reaves (DB), B.J. Blunt (ILB), Deion Harris (FS), Shaun Wilson (RB), Cam Sims (WR).

Transactions

We are projecting a trade – Trent Williams for either draft picks or players.  Possibly a combo of picks and players and such a trade could include additional players.  Williams has emphatically stated that he is not returning to the team and we now include a trade in this roster prediction.

Next. Studs and duds from Washington's game vs. the Bengals. dark

The Redskins may add a free agent veteran or two and it would certainly change how the roster will take shape.  Injuries in training camp or preseason games will also influence what the roster will be on opening day.  For now, there is the latest roster prediction.
