Dud: Samaje Perine

It seems that Perine’s chance to prove himself has come and gone.

Though Jay Gruden has gushed about Perine this offseason, the fact of the matter is that he hasn’t shown up in the first two preseason game. He was solid in the first one, blocking well in some passing situations and generating some yardage despite playing behind a weak offensive line.

But any progress that he made was nullified in the second preseason game.

Perine performed poorly against the Bengals. There’s no two ways about it. Too often, he failed to find the hole at the line of scrimmage. On his first carry, he did see a hole open on the backside and plowed forward for no gain. After that, he seemed to be looking for a hole constantly, dancing in the backfield for little to no gain on many of his carries.

All told, Perine finished the contest with 5 carries for just 1 yard. He isn’t doing much to make a case for a roster spot and his only saving grace is that no other player has stepped up significantly. Still, Shaun Wilson looked good on punt return duties (though he was carted off) and Craig Reynolds has generated some buzz as well. That could make Perine’s spot on the roster a bit more unsettled than it seemed to be during camp.
