Dud: Josh Norman

Norman didn’t play much for the Redskins. But, his time on the field impactful in a bad way.

On the first drive of the game, Norman was called for a bogus penalty. He put a hit on Giovani Bernard that was called for helmet-to-helmet contact. On reply, it was abundantly clear that the Norman had hit Bernard shoulder-to-shoulder. And as a result of the call, he was irate.

Now, Norman’s anger was warranted. But his actions after the call got him into trouble. He was involved in a shouting match with the officials and ultimately was flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct call to draw 30 penalty yards in one play.

Again, the call was terrible, but one of the issues for the Redskins in the past few seasons has been penalties. They need to cut down on big ones that have a negative impact on them. Even though it was the preseason, getting the second 15-yard penalty was bad news for Norman. He is one of the veteran-most players in a young secondary, and he should be looking to set an example. This wasn’t a great one.

Perhaps Norman only did this because it was the preseason and truly, it doesn’t matter whether or not he gets ejected from the game. Still, Norman’s actions guaranteed a dud performance in this outing solely because of the yardage he cost the team.

Norman is lucky that Montae Nicholson’s pick-six bailed him out. Otherwise, he may be getting a bit more criticism for the penalties he drew.
